Project |04 Shaun Beeley interview

Beeley buoyant ahead of Southend

MORECAMBE defender Shaun Beeley is confident the club can bounce back from their dismal display at Plymouth Argyle last Saturday. The Shrimps lost 5-0, leaving them 16th in the Sky Bet League Two table and seven points above the relegation zone.

Beeley believes this weekend’s fixture against Southend provides the perfect opportunity to right their wrongs as Jim Bentley’s side look for their first victory since Boxing Day.

He told The Score: “They are in similar form to us at the minute; it will be a good game. One we are up for. They have got some good players. Saturday was poor; we know we should have done better, we are all just disappointed really and we were disappointed in ourselves.

“There’s still a buzz around the place, we have a great set of lads here. We have had a hard week, working on certain bits we need to improve on. Defensively we need to improve and hopefully that will pay dividends come the weekend.”

Manager Bentley was quoted after the defeat to Plymouth suggesting the club have entered a relegation battle but Beeley is looking on the positive side.

With thirteen games of the campaign remaining, the 25-year-old right-back is targeting much more than purely survival.

“You could equally say we are in a promotion battle because there are few points that separate us from the top six and there are few points that separate us from the bottom two,” he added.

“It can go either way but with the lads we have got we stand a great chance of pushing back up the table.

“A couple more wins and the confidence will improve and once you get on a winning run, who knows we could end up in the Play-Offs.”
